Some people do a dip of 8 grams per 80 litres for 5 minutes, but we found that it burns the gills and we do not recommend Potassium dips at all.

If the fish are small or scaleless(doitsu), decrease the dosage by 30%.

To sterilize ponds, filter or equipment and to kill bacteria, fungus and viruses.

If used in the pond, do not repeat within 7 days. Not only is Virkon S a very potent disinfectant, but is less toxic than Potassium or Chloramine T. It can be used in many different ways, as a foot dip, bath or spray to disinfect all kinds of equipment, hands after treatments and can be used in direct contact with the koi (in the pond water) to kill pathogens, by adding 5g/1000 liters. Virkon S is also ideal to bring down the bacterial count in your pond after parasite infections and treatment, to prevent secondary bacterial infection.

If you need to sterilize your pond completely with no fish in the water, add 20g/1000 liters. Virkon S are normally being used to sterilize a pond after a KHV infection. The koi societies also use Virkon S lately to disinfect all show ponds and equipment before and after koi shows.

This is an insecticide (Organophosphorous) normally used for caterpillars and previously marketed under various brand names including Dipterex and Masoten.

It is a very effective and fairly cheap treatment for Anchor worm and Fish louse but also for Gill maggots, Gill fluke, Ich, Trichodenia, various insects and all types of worms and other parasites It can also be used to disinfect new plants.

Can be dangerous if used in water above 20 degree Celsius . In water above 25 degrees Celsius, use a half dosage.

It can cause spinal injury if you overdose.

10 g / 10 000 litres, alternatively two treatments of 5 g / 10 000 l with three days apart.

Alternative for Trichlorfon.

Treatment for Anchor worm and Fish Louse.

Formalin is a very effective and cheap medicine against all Protozoal diseases and external parasites, but should never be used with salt. The active ingredient is Formaldehyde(40%)

For best results, it should be mixed with Malachite green (combined known as FMC or F & M) which makes it a very effective and recommended treatment for Trichodenia, Chilodonella, Costia and White spot.

FMC Mix: 100 mg Malachite Green and 15 ml Formalin per 1000 liters. (Some people also mix 100 mg Methylene blue into the mix)

It should not be used in water temperatures below 10 degree Celsius and it is extremely important to use the correct dosage, as it is a dangerous medicine and you will kill your fish if you overdose. FMC should also not be used if you have a high concentration of salt in your water. A concentration of 0.02% salt is fine.

If you have goldfish in the pond, you should use 50% of this dosage.

Yellow in colour, quite expensive and also marketed by the retail as Antibacterial Plus.

It is a anti bacterial treatment and it is used for the reduction of viral infections, mouth fungus, salt water ich, fin and tail rot, fungus, saproglenia, skin parasites, oodinium (velvet) or sliminess of the skin.

Dosage: 500 mg/l for 30 minutes or indefinite @ 5 g / 1000 liters.

Acts as a disease preventative as well as a general tonic.

Highly successful treatment of velvet.

Extremely effective in the prevention of egg fungus and other egg related diseases.

Dosage: 4.4 ml / 1000 liters. Repeat after 5 days with 2.2 ml/1000 if you still find fluke on your fish.

Seponver Plus is a mix of Closantel 25mg/ml & Mebendazole 37,5mg/ml and is one of the best fluke treatments available. It will kill 100% of fluke within two days.

Apart from using it as a fluke treatment, it is also very effective treatment for internal parasites.

Mebendazole(without the Closantel) can also be used for fluke and internal parasites at 1mg / l for 24 hours or as a bath: 100 mg / l for 2 hours.

It will not harm the biological filter and it is very safe for use on koi fish. When used in pond water at 0.3% salt solution, Seponver Plus will kill 100% of flukes within 24 hours. Important Note: It will kill goldfish and several other species of fish. It is not recommended for use on any fish other than koi (or long-fin koi).

Clove oil is a natural product ideally suited for Anaesthesia and the active ingredient is Eugenol.

Procedure for anaesthesia:
1 Add pond water to a bucket big enough to cover the gills of your koi and aerate the water.

2 Calculate the amount of water in the bucket.

3 Add 2 drops of clove oil per 1 liter of water in the bucket. (0.5 ml / liter) Because oil and water does not mix well, I first mix it with some of the bucket water by putting it in a small container which I then shake well before adding it to the bucket. An empty cool drink bottle works well. This also prevents you from accidentally releasing to much oil into the bucket.

4 Add the fish to the container and cover it for with a wet towel to prevent it from jumping out.

5 The fish should start to roll over a bit after 3 - 7 minutes. If not, add a bit more clove oil. The bigger the fish, the more required, and different batches of clove oil has different strengths. Gill movement will become slower, but should not stop. When adequately sedated, you should be able to lift it with support in the center and the tail should not flex much.

6 Now you can take the fish out of the bucket and place it onto the wet towel for treatment. Ensure that there are a soft surface. A bubble rap sheet works quite good. Hold the fish down with the same or another wet towel as it might jump.

7 Now you can treat. Work as fast as possible and get the fish back into the pond(supported) or another aerated bucket with clean water as soon as possible. It should recover within a few minutes.

8 If you only need to do a scraping, a half dosage can be used, although you don't even have to sedate the koi if you have experience in doing a scraping.

To euthanise koi:

Add 20-25 drops/liter of Clove oil to the bucket
It will send the fish into a peaceful deep sleep, from which it will not regain consciousness and will pass away painlessly.

Baytril is a 2.3% or 5% solution of Enrofloxacin. Use a fine 25 gauge needle and inject just behind the pectoral fin where there is a soft area without scales. Remember to disinfect the injection site afterwards. (Friar's balsam and/or Malachite green) Please make sure that there are no air bubbles in the syringe. A good idea is to place the koi in a plastic bag, hold it tight around the fish, and inject the fish through the plastic bag.
